Five PhD positions at the Faculty of Humanities, UvA

Applications are invited for five PhD fellowships at the Faculty of Humanities, tenable from 1 November 2016 (4 years, 0.8 FTE).

Job description

The wide range of research covered by the Faculty of Humanities is organised in five research schools, which together form the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research ( Each research school covers an important research area within the faculty:

  • Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC
  • Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES)
  • Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA)
  • Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH)
  • Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM)

The Faculty of Humanities also participates - besides the Faculty of Sciences - in the:

  • Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC)

Each school/institute has its own research programme. Research schools/institute are also the home base for PhD candidates, who interact with each other and with senior members in the research groups that make up the research school.

Tasks will include:

  • Completion and defence of a PhD thesis within the contract period;
  • regular presentation of intermediate research results at work-shops and conferences;
  • participation in the UvA PhD training programme.


Applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in a field relevant to the proposed PhD project and the research areas of the AIHR/ILLC before the start date of the fellowship.

The PhD candidates at the Faculty of Humanities, UvA will be appointed within one of the Research Schools or the ILLC. The appointment will be for 4 years for 0.8 FTE under the terms of employment currently valid for the Faculty. Initially, a contract will be given for 16 months, with an extension for the following 32 months on the basis of a positive evaluation. The starting date of the contract is 1 November 2016. Five positions are available.

The salary for the position (based on a full-time appointment) will be €2,174 during the first year (gross per month) and will reach €2,779 during the fourth year, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

PhD candidates receive a tuition fee waiver, and have free access to the programmes of the Graduate School for Humanities in Amsterdam and the National Research Schools.

Applications should include a description of the proposed research project (max. 2500 words, written in English), a full academic CV, and a list of MA/MSc grades (see outline below). Applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in a relevant field before the start date of the fellowship.

Previous contact with the Faculty of Humanities or possible supervisors is not necessary. International researchers are also encouraged to apply. Proposed projects must be relevant to one of the research schools within AIHR or to ILLC.

Outline application


The proposal should be concise (max. 2500 words) and should address the project's aims and scope, its contribution to scholarship, and its methods (theoretical approach, objects of research, etc.). The possible supervisor(s) at the UvA should also be stated.

The proposal should be divided into the following sections:

  • Specify the Research School of your choice (one option only)
  • Provisional title
  • Name of candidate
  • Possible supervisor(s) (NB. previous contact is not necessary)
  • Summary of 250 words
  • Contribution to the programme of one of the Research Schools and optionally one of the Research Priority Areas, see (ca. 500 words).
  • Central issues/aims
  • Methods
  • Objects of research
  • Work plan for four years
  • Contact details of two references

Academic CV:

The CV should contain the applicant’s full address and contact details, previous education, previous university (or relevant) employment, conference presentations, and publications.

MA/MSc Grades:

It is not necessary to submit an officially certified list of MA/MSc grades. A scan of the list is sufficient. Applicants must have completed all relevant coursework and examinations for the MA/MSc by October 2016. If the list of grades is not yet complete, please submit an overview of your grades at the time of application.

Selection Procedure

The applications will be evaluated by a faculty-wide selection committee composed of representatives from each of the Research Schools and the ILLC, and a PhD researcher. Committee members may not vote in cases of involvement with applicants.

The committee will make a selection of approximately 15-20 candidates to invite for a 15-minute interview in Amsterdam. Short-listed applicants will be asked to submit a sample of their academic writing (max. 1500 words, for example part of the MA/MSc thesis) prior to the interview.

The final selection will be made immediately following the interviews. The five most promising candidates will be selected.

Timetable 2016 (indicative)

  • 15 August (11.00 a.m. CET) - Deadline submission applications to the Faculty via
  • Until 22 August - Applications are checked for completeness
  • 12 September - Applicants are selected for the interviews
  • 19-23 September - Applicants are informed whether they are invited for an interview
  • 26 September - Interviews with 15-20 candidates; committee determines final ranking
  • 30 September - Committee submits result to the Dean
  • 30 September - Applicants informed about the result
  • 1 November - Applicants start PhD projects
