Ubbo Emmius PhD Scholarships

Location: Groningen

Two ``Ubbo Emmius'' scholarships are being offered by the Faculty of Philosophy in Groningen, the Netherlands, to non-Dutch students who wish to work for a Ph.D. in philosophy.

  • The scholarships are for four years.
  • The after-tax stipend is approximately 1300 euro per month.
  • The candidates must have an M.A. or M.Sc. in philosophy, or in another discipline with demonstrable affinity to philosophy.
  • The candidates should send a letter of application, with a curriculum vitae, and a proposal for the Ph.D. research to be undertaken. This research should lie in one or more of the following two areas:
    1. practical philosophy (social philosophy, social epistemology, philosophy of culture, political philosophy, ethics);
    2. theoretical philosophy (logic, argumentation theory, philosophy of science, epistemology, philosophy of mind -- consult first http://www.rug.nl/filosofie/faculteit/vakgroepen/tf/researchTF ).
  • The proposal should be written in English and should comprise about 1000 words. It should be sent before December 13, 2004 to Mrs Marga Hids, by email () or ordinary mail: Mrs M. Hids, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Groningen, Oude Boteringestraat 52, 9712 GL Groningen, The Netherlands.

  • The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen has in recent years been adjudicated by international review committees to be pre-eminent in the Netherlands, both in research and in teaching excellence. The faculty comprises three areas of specialisation: history of philosophy, theoretical philosophy, and practical philosophy. There are 7 professors, 12 lecturers and about 15 Ph.D. students. The total number of regular students is about 150.
  • The faculty stresses the intimate connection between philosophy and the developments in other disciplines, both in the sciences and in the arts. Indeed, most of the professors hold a degree in another discipline; and, together with a thorough grounding in the great philosophical systems, attention is also directed to the scientific, literary or political contexts within which they have arisen.
  • The faculty is located in a monumental, partly medieval and partly spanking new building, in the heart of the old city.
